More about Victor View

A quick lake viewVictor View is a small, paved roadside overlook on the east rim, at mile 21.2 on East Rim Drive.

Victor View is a small, paved roadside overlook on the east rim, at mile 21.2 on East Rim Drive. It looks across Crater Lake toward Wizard Island and Cloudcap Bay. If you're driving the east rim, I'd stop for another wide caldera view; you can take it in from the pullout without setting off on a hike. For a photo, keep some of the near rim in the frame so the lake's scale comes through.

East Rim Drive generally closes for winter around November, or earlier when snow requires it, and reopens as plowing progresses. Check current road conditions before you go. The paved parking area is confirmed, but site-specific restrooms and drinking water aren't. Older accounts describe a separate, steep and loose path toward Sentinel Rock; its current condition and public access aren't established, so treat that as a separate, unverified route.

Built into Rim DriveThe stonework is part of the stop.

The stonework is part of the stop. Landscape architect Francis Lange designed Victor View as one of Rim Drive's parking overlooks, with masonry walls and a planted island that blend into the slope. A short loop road covers traces of an older alignment, so the pullout has a bit of the road's history built into it.

Victor View honors Frances Fuller Victor, an Oregon historian, writer and photographer who visited Crater Lake in the early 1870s. Her writing helped bring attention to the lake. The older Victor Rock namesake was the site where Sinnott Memorial now stands; Victor View's name became official in 1945.
