Plaikni Falls

Plaikni Falls is a snowmelt-fed waterfall reached by a forest trail off Pinnacles Road on Crater Lake’s east side. It trades the rim’s open lake views for a walk through trees to a rocky cascade. The route is about two miles round trip, a good choice when you want a short hike with a clear destination.

From East Rim Drive, turn onto Pinnacles Road near Phantom Ship Overlook; after about 1.2 miles, limited trailhead parking is on the left. The path is mostly easy, with a steeper stretch near the falls. Parking is limited and the viewing area is compact, so start early if you can. Pinnacles Road closes when East Rim Drive closes for winter, sometimes before November 1.

The park describes access for all-terrain wheelchairs except for “the last 1/4,” without specifying a unit for that exception. Check with the park before relying on that note.

Water spills over a rocky wall into a stream that steps down among boulders and fallen wood. The small viewing space can fill up, but there is plenty to notice in the cascades below the main drop. For a photo, frame the falls with the stream in the foreground and stay on the path around the fragile streamside plants.

Plaikni is a Klamath word translated as “from the high country.” A spring nearly 7,000 feet above sea level feeds the stream, which spills over a cliff carved by glaciers. The short walk ends at a feature shaped by both high-elevation water and the park’s older ice-carved landscape.

Wildflowers grow along the trail. At a right-hand bend, listen for pikas, marmots, and songbirds, as the park suggests. Keep to the path to protect the plants beside the stream.
