Watchman Peak Trail

Watchman Peak Trail is a 1.6-mile out-and-back from Watchman Overlook to the old fire lookout at the summit. Allow about an hour and expect roughly 420 feet of climbing. I'd do it if you want a proper summit without giving up half a day: the route climbs from around 7,600 feet to just over 8,000, then opens to a 360-degree view of Crater Lake, Wizard Island, and the rim. The steady grade, short distance, and high starting elevation make this feel harder than the mileage suggests. Sunset is the busiest time at the lookout; go earlier if you'd like more breathing room. The Corrals viewpoint lot itself gives you a quick rim stop, so the climb earns its time with the higher lookout and the broader panorama.

The approach starts across open pumice on part of the old Rim Road alignment. Then the path turns into a series of switchbacks up the south flank. The historic route was laid out in 1916, and the summit section climbs at about a 15 percent grade. The tread passes through sparse subalpine vegetation, with whitebark pine, mountain hemlock, and penstemon on the slope. Give the uphill your attention, especially if you're not used to hiking above 7,500 feet; the view comes only after a steady climb.

The present Watchman Observation Station was designed by Francis Lange and built between 1931 and 1933 as both a fire lookout and a place to interpret the park for visitors. It is no longer staffed as a fire lookout. Its stone base, muted colors, and rough timber were chosen to sit quietly against the volcanic slope. From around the summit, you can look across the lake to Wizard Island and around the rim in every direction. The tower's original design included an indoor museum and a second-story viewing platform, but current public entry into the building is unclear, so plan on the outside view rather than a visit inside. For a photo, frame Wizard Island across the water and leave a little summit rock in the foreground; it gives the lake some scale.

Start at Watchman Overlook, also called Corrals viewpoint, on West Rim Drive, about 3.8 miles northwest of Rim Village. A vault toilet is at the parking area. The trail is a poor choice when snow or ice covers the high slope: these elevations can keep it unavailable into early summer, with the timing changing from year to year. Check current conditions before the drive. Pets are not allowed on this trail. Sunset brings the most people, and parking can be difficult then, so leave time to park and climb before the light fades.
