Wistman's Wood from Two Bridges

Overview

About Two Bridges Hotel

Why stop

  • Riverside coaching-inn character with proper food and cream teas
  • Useful starting point for Wistman's Wood and moorland walks

Heads up

  • Not a standalone attraction if you aren't eating, staying or walking
  • Limited public parking around the Wistman's Wood approach
Two Bridges Hotel is a historic country-house hotel and food stop on the banks of the West Dart, at the road junction by Two Bridges. It isn't a sightseeing attraction in its own right so much as a useful place to eat, stay, or start a moorland day. Keep it on your list if you want a proper meal in the middle of Dartmoor, or a comfortable base for Wistman's Wood. If you're only passing for the view, the river and bridge make a pleasant pause, but you don't need long.

Inside, it still has coaching-inn character: fires, old clocks and antiques, traditional lounges, a bar and a restaurant. Day visitors can come for lunch or dinner, morning coffee, drinks or a Devon cream tea; the menu leans on seasonal local produce, and Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale is the obvious local drink to look for. The place began as the Saracen's Head, and the Two Bridges name refers to the old crossings of the West Dart and Cowsic. The setting is part of the appeal, so look from the gardens or terrace towards the river rather than treating it as just a white building beside the road.

Opposite the hotel is the small visitor car park for Wistman's Wood, but spaces are very limited; hotel parking is for guests and customers, so don't assume it is a free trailhead. The short route to the wood is about 4 km return and changes from a broad track to rough, muddy ground. This is a protected place of fragile mosses and lichens: stay on the route and don't walk through the wood or scramble on its boulders. For a longer outing, the hotel's circuit to Wistman's Wood and Crockern Tor is about 5 miles and includes a steep section and high stiles.

Make the stop workThe hotel sits at the B3212/B3357 junction near Princetown.

The hotel sits at the B3212/B3357 junction near Princetown. There are Blue Badge bays, a step-free route to the entrance, accessible toilets and step-free ground-floor public rooms, but no lift to the first floor. Assistance dogs are welcome; other dogs need prior arrangement and aren't allowed in the restaurant. For a photo, use the little bridge and river in the foreground so the hotel has a sense of place; a straight front-on shot loses the Dartmoor setting.
