Circle the edge of a young volcanic maar on this short, scenic loop. The Ubehebe Crater Rim Trail is about 1.5 miles total, encircling a half‑mile‑wide pit that drops roughly 500–777 feet. It starts right from the signed parking area on the rim, so you get instant payoff; the loop delivers shifting perspectives into the crater and out across a stark, colorful desert.
The star is Ubehebe itself—layers of volcanic tuff and sediment peeled open by an explosion when magma met groundwater. You’ll also pass views of neighboring craters; the west side offers a short spur to Little Hebe, whose crisp, uneroded rim contrasts dramatically with Ubehebe’s bigger, older-looking walls. Geology nerd or not, the color bands and texture changes are easy to spot as you go.
Expect loose cinders and gravel underfoot—think ball bearings on hardpack—plus short ups and downs along the rim. Figure roughly 400 feet of cumulative gain, which feels spicier because of the footing. Most hikers take 45–90 minutes, depending on stops and whether you add the Little Hebe spur (which bumps the total closer to ~1.8 miles). The route is fully exposed with no shade, and winds on the rim can be fierce.
Cooler months (fall through spring) are the sweet spot. Summer heat can be dangerous here, and the trail offers zero shade. On any day, aim for morning or late afternoon for the best lighting and more comfortable temps.
If you like big views for little mileage, obvious geology, and don’t mind wind and loose footing, this loop is absolutely worth it. If you hate exposure, grit-in-your-teeth wind, or rolling on marbles, you might prefer a short viewpoint stop instead of the full loop.
Park at the Ubehebe Crater parking area/viewpoint on the rim; the signed loop starts directly from the lot.
Fully exposed with strong, abrasive winds and loose cinder footing; stay on the path and back from unstable edges. No water or shade, and pets are not allowed on park trails. Avoid summer heat.
