Denali Train Depot

You’ll find the depot around Mile 1.25 of Denali Park Road, adjacent to the Visitor Center complex and near Riley Creek. It’s a simple, seasonal outdoor platform with benches and covered waiting areas. The Denali Star Train serves it in summer; in winter, limited service may operate as a flag stop. Expect fixed, predictable train windows rather than all-day activity.

On a typical summer day, the southbound train from Fairbanks arrives around midday, and the northbound from Anchorage shows up in the late afternoon. If you’re timing a pickup or just want to watch the action, those are the hours to target. The approach by rail is a highlight of many trips, with sweeping Alaska Range scenery on the way—think Hurricane Gulch and Broad Pass—though wildlife at the depot itself is uncommon.

Hotel and lodge shuttles meet trains right at the depot, so coordinate your pickup in advance. Because crowds concentrate around the scheduled arrivals, give yourself extra time for baggage and boarding. If you’re planning a scenic ride, book rail tickets well ahead—especially the popular dome‑car service.

Before the highway linked Anchorage to the park in 1971, rail was the primary way visitors reached Denali. Arriving at this depot echoes that early travel era, even as modern trains and services keep things efficient. The National Park Service even maintains a live webcam on the depot, a handy way to peek at conditions and see whether a train is in.

This is the Alaska Railroad station, not the Denali Bus Depot used for park bus tours. They’re separate facilities, each with its own purpose and schedules.
