Overview

About Llyn Crafnant

Why stop

  • Waterfalls, woodland, and mountain reflections keep the walk changing
  • A peaceful lake circuit with a genuinely accessible short option

Heads up

  • The approach road is narrow and awkward when traffic meets
  • The full loop has rough sections, and café availability is seasonal
Llyn Crafnant is a reservoir tucked into a quiet valley where Gwydir Forest meets the lower slopes of the Carneddau. The water is the draw, but the setting does more than provide a single viewpoint: the shore, woods, open hills, and small waterfalls keep changing as you walk. It feels more secluded than its short distance from Trefriw suggests.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Go early or late in the day for the calmest feel and the best chance of reflections before wind roughens the surface. Autumn brings colour to the woodland, while clear days open the mountain views at the head of the valley. Soft morning or evening light is more flattering for photographs than the bright middle of the day, though the lake can be atmospheric in cloud and mist too.

Walks and access

Start at the Natural Resources Wales car park at the north end of the lake. The family-friendly circuit is about 2.5 miles (4 km), following a mixture of surfaced sections, tracks, and a little-used minor road on the return. It was improved for buggies and pushchairs, but some sections remain slightly rough, so do not treat the full loop as uniformly smooth.

There is also a shorter, well-surfaced riverside option along the Afon Crafnant. Longer viewpoint routes climb away from the water and are a different proposition from the easy lakeside circuit. Choose the loop that matches your time and footwear rather than assuming every path here has the same difficulty.

“You're coming up on Llyn Crafnant, a reservoir in a wooded valley below the Carneddau. It was built to supply Llanrwst; a stone monument near the outflow marks that connection.”

Both car parks have toilets and picnic benches, and the lake is a good place to slow down with a packed lunch. A privately run lakeside café has operated seasonally, but availability is not dependable enough to build a day around it. Bring food and water if you need a guaranteed stop.

This is a private fishing water, not a general swimming or boating lake. The shore path gives you the best access to the scenery. Keep an eye and ear out for water birds and woodland birds, particularly on the quieter side of the circuit, and listen for the streams and falls after wet weather.

The main drawbackThe approach from Trefriw is a narrow single-track road with limited passing places.

The approach from Trefriw is a narrow single-track road with limited passing places. Take it slowly, expect to meet oncoming traffic, and be prepared to reverse to a passing place at busy times. Once you arrive, the full loop still has uneven ground, so shoes with decent grip are sensible.

Why stopThe reservoir also has a bit of local history.

The reservoir also has a bit of local history. It was created as a water supply for Llanrwst, and the stone monument near the outflow marks its connection with the town. That gives the lake more character than a simple photo stop, especially when you take time to walk beyond the first shore view.
