Tŷ Hyll, the Ugly House

Overview

About Tŷ Hyll (The Ugly House)

Why stop

  • Memorable stonework and an atmospheric pollinator garden
  • A rewarding food-and-history stop on the A5

Heads up

  • The small interior can fill quickly
  • Traffic noise from the A5 softens the otherwise quiet setting
Tŷ Hyll is a wonderfully odd roadside landmark: a low cottage built from huge, rough stones, with a steep slate roof and a chimney that looks almost grown out of the wall. The name means “Ugly House,” but the building is much more charming than ugly. It makes a memorable short stop between Betws-y-Coed and Capel Curig, especially if you enjoy places with a bit of character rather than another grand mountain viewpoint.

Before you go

Best time to go

The garden and woodland are open year-round, but spring through early autumn gives you the fullest garden and the best chance of seeing pollinator activity. Late summer and autumn bring fungi on fallen wood and tree stumps. Go on a weekday or earlier in the day for a quieter wander and softer light on the stonework. The tea room is popular and the interior is small, so busy periods can mean a wait.

This is still a roadside stop, not a silent woodland retreat. The A5 runs immediately alongside the property, and traffic noise is part of the experience. Bring a waterproof layer and shoes with grip if you plan to explore beyond the cottage, then take a few minutes to sit in the woodland circle at the top of the slope.

“You're approaching Tŷ Hyll, the Ugly House, a little cottage built from huge rough stones beside the A5. Its name is misleading; that uneven stonework and steep slate roof give it a storybook look.”

More about Tŷ Hyll (The Ugly House)

The story and surroundingsNobody knows exactly who built Tŷ Hyll or when.

Nobody knows exactly who built Tŷ Hyll or when. Local legend calls it a tŷ unnos, a “one-night house” raised on common land before dawn. Other stories cast it as a robbers’ hideout, while another plausible theory is that it sheltered workers building the A5 bridge over the Llugwy in 1820. The building is not clearly recorded until the 19th century, so treat the older stories as folklore, not settled history.

The first known resident was the shepherd John Roberts in 1900. The Riley family lived here from 1928 to 1961 and welcomed visitors, continuing the tradition of telling stories inside the cottage. The Snowdonia Society rescued the listed building from near-dereliction in 1988 and restored it.

  • Garden and woodland: Look for oak, birch, ash, rowan, holly and hazel, with mosses and polypody ferns on the trees. A pond and pollinator planting add interest beyond the cottage itself.
  • Wildlife: Quiet visitors may see frogs or frogspawn at the pond, a vole beneath the bird feeders, and in summer the returning pied flycatchers that breed in the woodland. Pipistrelle bats roost in the house, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
  • Practical facilities: OSM mapping verifies a small free customer car park and a free dry toilet, not a conventional flush restroom. The paths around the cottage and garden are made of stone and can be uneven after rain.
Why stopThe house is cared for by the Snowdonia Society.

The house is cared for by the Snowdonia Society. A small, independently run tea room occupies the building, and an upstairs exhibition explains the work of honeybees and pollinators. The terraced garden is planted to attract pollinators, while the roughly four-acre ancient oak woodland behind it offers a peaceful place to stretch your legs.
