Bear Lake Trail

Bear Lake Trail is a 3.2-mile out-and-back from the end of Bear Lake Road to Bear Lake and back. The published figure is 1.6 miles one way; the mapped line measures about 1.75, so expect a small distance variation. Allow about two to three hours for the walk and time to stop; the route is nearly flat, and its draw is a quiet look at the lake and its tree-lined canal rather than a big overlook.

The trailhead is at the end of Bear Lake Road, a separate 2-mile approach that you can drive, bike or walk. Bikes are allowed on the road, not on the trail. The road closes to traffic in summer because of flooding and erosion. If you walk in from the road’s start, add 4 miles for the return approach.

Bear Lake Trail is listed as passable but unmaintained, and hikers travel at their own risk. It is left unmaintained to protect critical habitat for Cape Sable thoroughwort, so don’t expect a cleared boardwalk surface. Hikers often describe the walk as easy and level, but its unmaintained status matters more than the gentle grade when you decide whether it suits you.

The trail follows the Homestead Canal, built in 1922, through hardwood hammock mixed with mangroves. More than 50 tree species grow here, and the canopy makes this a good area for woodland birds. This is a quiet nature walk with a bit of canal history; it is a modest payoff if you are looking for a dramatic view.

Pets are not allowed on park trails. Mosquitoes and biting flies can occur year-round and may be severe in hot, humid summer weather. No food, drinking water or toilets are listed at the trailhead or along the route, so plan for a remote walk and the extra road approach if you cannot drive or bike to the start.
