Guy Bradley Trail

Guy Bradley Trail is a point-to-point shoreline path between the memorial beside Flamingo Visitor Center and the campground day-use area. The mapped line between those access points is about 0.56 mile one way; the park lists 1 mile one way, and the available route map does not show a connector long enough to explain the difference. Treat the distance as approximate and check the route’s endpoints before setting out. Allow 20–30 minutes one way, or about 40–60 minutes if you retrace it. This is an easy accessible walk and birding stop, rather than a destination hike.

Start at the Guy Bradley memorial, then follow the sidewalk toward Flamingo Lodge. The path bends behind the lodge and stays near the water to the campground parking turnaround. It is mostly smooth and paved, with stretches under mangroves and short openings to the bay. The trail is point-to-point: arrange a ride at the far end or walk back the same way. Bikes are allowed; pets are prohibited on park trails. Restrooms are available at both ends, but food or drinking water along the route was not confirmed.

Black mangroves frame much of the shoreline, so views of Florida Bay and the Keys come through openings rather than as one broad panorama. Watch for the low wooden pier pilings along the water, remnants of Flamingo’s earlier life as a small fishing village. For a photo, include the path or pilings with the bay to show where you are.

Guy Bradley was an Audubon warden and Monroe County deputy killed in 1905 while protecting a bird rookery in Florida Bay. Heron plumes were fashionable hat trim, and wardens were hired to protect rookeries from plume hunting. The trail’s memorial and name preserve that part of Flamingo’s conservation history.

Mosquitoes and biting flies can be present year-round and are often severe in the hot months. Hikers have reported heavy mosquitoes even in winter, so carry repellent and don’t assume a cool day will be bug-free.
