Cascade Creek Campsite

Overview

Cascade Creek is the big, no-frills DOC campground on the Milford Road. Set between Cascade Creek, Lake Gunn and the Eglinton River, it’s a grassy, open expanse ringed by beech forest and mountain views—perfect as a night-before base for Milford Sound or a mellow stop in northern Fiordland.

Why camp here

• Location: It’s the closest DOC option to Milford Sound (about a 45-minute drive), so you can beat the tour buses in the morning without paying Milford lodge prices.
• Space: With around 120 non‑powered sites, there’s room to spread out and spots for larger rigs. Tent sites take a little hunting, but they’re there.
• Nature on the doorstep: The easy Lake Gunn Nature Walk loops right from camp through lush beech forest to the lake’s edge.

What to expect

Facilities are intentionally simple: several drop toilets, untreated water (from tanks/nearby river—treat before drinking), picnic tables, and a couple of covered shelters for cooking/eating. No showers, no powered sites, no store, and no cell service. Fires are only in designated fireplaces and only when permitted—check current restrictions.

Scenery, wildlife and activities

Expect classic Fiordland: mature beech forest with a rainforest feel, clear creeks, and valley-and-peak views. Birdlife includes common natives you’ll hear and see around camp and on the forest loop. Anglers target the Eglinton and Cascade rivers; clean, check, dry your gear—didymo has impacted local waterways. On clear nights, the dark skies make for excellent stargazing.

Booking is required year‑round and rangers do check. Recent prices reported: adults around $18, children discounted, under‑5s free (subject to change). Pay online to keep things simple.

• Peak season (summer/holidays) fills fast—arrive mid‑afternoon to snag a good tent spot.
• For quieter vibes, aim for shoulder seasons or weekdays.
• Photography: Soft morning and evening light across the flats and forest; clear nights are best for stars.
• Weather shifts quickly here—cold snaps and rain happen even in summer.

• Sandflies can be active at dusk; repellent and long layers help.
