Lake Gunn Nature Walk

This short loop is the Milford Road stretch-your-legs special: a 0.87‑mile/1.4‑km total loop through red beech forest dripping in moss, with a brief detour to a stony beach on Lake Gunn for mountain-and-water vistas. The track starts from the clearly signed Cascade Creek car park beside State Highway 94 and is well formed, flat, and easy for all ages.

Expect that classic Fiordland “green room”: ancient beech trunks layered in moss, ferns, and lichens, soft underfoot, and birdsong overhead. Keep an ear out for tomtit, rifleman, fantail, and South Island robin; very lucky visitors might encounter yellowhead/mohua. Interpretation panels along the way give useful context to the forest and its ecology.

Views of the lake are concentrated at the beach spur rather than continuous along the loop. If you want the payoff fast, walk the loop clockwise—within a few minutes you’ll pop out at the lakeshore. On calm days the still water mirrors the surrounding peaks and makes an easy photography win. Beyond the main loop, short side paths reach additional pocket beaches and quiet fishing spots.

Logistics are friendly: toilets and picnic tables sit right at the Cascade Creek car park/campsite. While the track is generally gentle and suitable for many with limited mobility, Fiordland weather can make surfaces slick—check conditions if you have accessibility needs.

Best time to hike: it’s open year‑round. Spring brings forest wildflowers; autumn gilds the beech canopy; winter can deliver snow‑dusted peaks with fewer people. Fiordland’s weather turns on a dime, so pack a rain layer any month. For quieter footsteps and glassier reflections, come early or late in the day. Do bring insect repellent—sandflies love the lakeshore.
