About Lake Gunn Nature Walk
This easy 0.9-mile/1.4-km loop begins at the signed Cascade Creek car park on State Highway 94 and returns to the same parking area. Allow about 45 minutes for the full walk, including the short shared approach between the car park and the forest loop.
The route moves through red beech forest layered with moss, ferns and lichens, with birdsong and interpretation panels along the way. The main loop is an easy, generally flat outing suited to a relaxed family stop on the Milford Road.
Lake views are concentrated at the lakeshore section rather than spread across the whole walk. The DOC area information also notes side trips to lake beaches and sheltered fishing spots; treat those as optional additions rather than part of this measured loop.
The Cascade Creek car park/campsite has toilets and picnic facilities. Fiordland weather changes quickly, track surfaces can be slick after rain, and sandflies are common near the water, so carry a rain layer and insect repellent. Check current DOC conditions and your own mobility needs before relying on accessibility claims.
