Eglinton Nature Walk

If your Milford Road day needs a quick dose of Fiordland magic without breaking a sweat, this is it. Often called the Eglinton Nature Walk, the official name you’ll see at the trailhead is Lake Gunn Nature Walk. It’s a 1.4 km/0.87 mile TOTAL loop that takes most people 30–45 minutes, starting from the Cascade Creek car park along SH94.

What you’ll see

The path winds through mature red beech forest draped in thick moss—classic, moody Fiordland. Keep an eye out for interpretive panels as you go, plus side paths that drop to a stony beach for wide-open views across Lake Gunn and the surrounding Eglinton Mountains (a Lord of the Rings “Misty Mountains” filming area). On calm days, you’ll snag mirror-like reflections; after rain, the greens pop and the forest feels extra primeval.

Wildlife and nature

This corridor is a hotspot for native birds: look and listen for South Island robins, tomtits, riflemen, kākā, and—if you’re lucky—yellowhead/mohua. Early or late in the day boosts your chances. The broader Eglinton Valley is a textbook glacial U-shape, and this loop samples both its lakeshore and mossy beech slopes.

Logistics

Trailhead parking, toilets, and a picnic spot are at Cascade Creek, about 78 km from Te Anau on SH94. The track is flat, well formed, and commonly described as wheelchair and stroller accessible. No permits are required, and pets aren’t allowed in Fiordland National Park. Expect wet or slippery sections after rain; sturdy footwear is still smart even for such an easy stroll.

Is it worth it?

Yes—especially if you want a mellow, family-friendly forest-and-lake sampler right off the Milford Road. It’s short, beautiful, and efficient. If you’re craving a bigger workout or a grand alpine vista, this won’t scratch that itch by itself—pair it with other stops along the Eglinton corridor.

Best time to hike

Year-round. Fiordland weather flips fast, so always bring a rain layer. In winter it’s quieter but muddier. From mid-November to early January, keep an eye out for bursts of lupins around Lake Gunn. For birdlife and softer light on the water, aim for morning or late afternoon.
