Walkwire

Overview

A few minutes from the Milford Road, the Mistake Creek Walkwire is a minimalist cable bridge that gives you a bite-sized hit of Fiordland adventure. It’s essentially one foot cable with hand wires for balance—old-school tramping infrastructure that’s rare on the park’s busier, fully bridged routes.

What Makes It Special

Unlike the big suspension bridges on marquee tracks, this is a backcountry-style crossing that tests your balance and focus. If you’ve never tried a walkwire, this is a safe, low-commitment place to experience one—close to the road yet surrounded by beech forest, clear streams, and views toward the Earl Mountains.

What You’ll See

Expect moss-draped forest, lively creek water underfoot, and glimpses of the Earl Mountains. The Mistake Creek Track that leads to it feels like a “fairy track” through lush beech and fern, with plenty of photo stops along the way.

Wildlife

Keep an eye (and ear) out for curious robins and tomtits flitting along the track, along with bellbirds and fantails. Kea occasionally roam the valley; if you’re lucky, you might spot one near the treeline.

Safety and Conditions

Move slowly on the wire and keep three points of contact. Fiordland weather changes fast—rain makes the cable slick and can quickly raise stream levels. The track can be muddy, rough, and lightly marked in places; be prepared to turn back if conditions deteriorate.

Getting There

Park at the Earl Mountain Tracks carpark on SH94 and follow the Mistake Creek Track. The walkwire is near the start of the track and is the key crossing feature before heading deeper up-valley.

Best Time to Visit

• Dry, calm days are best—ideally after a rain-free spell for grip and lower water.
• Weekdays see very light traffic; you’ll likely have it to yourself anytime outside peak holiday periods.
• For photography, morning light filters nicely through the beech canopy and onto the creek.
