About Walkwire

A few minutes from the Milford Road, the Mistake Creek Walkwire is a minimalist cable bridge that gives you a bite-sized hit of Fiordland adventure. It’s essentially one foot cable with hand wires for balance—old-school tramping infrastructure that’s rare on the park’s busier, fully bridged routes.

Tips for visiting Walkwire

Check the forecast—skip it in high winds or heavy rain.
Keep three points of contact on the wire and move slowly.
Carry insect repellent; sandflies love the creekside shade.

Dry, calm days are best—ideally after a rain-free spell for grip and lower water.
Weekdays see very light traffic; you’ll likely have it to yourself anytime outside peak holiday periods.
For photography, morning light filters nicely through the beech canopy and onto the creek.

Getting There

Park at the Earl Mountain Tracks carpark on SH94 and follow the Mistake Creek Track. The walkwire is near the start of the track and is the key crossing feature before heading deeper up-valley.
