Hazards Beach

Hazards Beach is a 3 km sandy shore on the western side of Freycinet Peninsula, facing Great Oyster Bay. It’s a good place to swim or spend time on a quieter stretch than Wineglass Bay, with clear water and a long sweep of pale sand. Most visitors reach it on the Peninsula Circuit, so plan a half-day outing. Carry all the drinking water you need; there is no fresh water at the beach.

The Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach circuit is 11 km, Grade 4, and about 4–5 hours. From the walking-tracks car park, the route climbs to Wineglass Bay Lookout, descends to Wineglass Bay, crosses the sandy isthmus to Hazards, then returns through coastal heath, blue gum woodland and she-oak forest. Expect steep sections and some uneven, exposed walking. The beach is a rewarding stop on a substantial hike.

The water is often clear, and Hazards Beach feels quieter than Wineglass Bay. Conditions vary, so treat calm water as a possibility rather than a promise. For a photo, use the pale sand and water in the foreground and the forested Hazards ridge behind the bay; the shoreline’s curve leads your eye toward the mountain.

The overnight campsite sits at the far southern end among blue gums, banksias and she-oaks. There’s a composting toilet at that campsite, a long way from the usual northern beach arrival. Don’t count on campsite facilities being beside you along the beach, and carry your own drinking water.

The narrow sandy isthmus between Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach is part of a tombolo and dune-barred lagoon system built from Holocene sand and alluvial deposits. It’s a striking change from the granite hills framing the two bays, and the route crosses this low sandy neck between their very different shores.
