Mount Graham

Mount Graham is a rocky summit on the remote southern Freycinet Peninsula, reached on foot from Wineglass Bay. The open top gives a wide view linking the famous bay with the quieter coast toward Schouten Island. Keep it for a long, strenuous day or an overnight walk; it is not a quick add-on to the lookout.

Start at Wineglass Bay car park, follow the lookout track and descend to the beach. Walk south along the sand to the walkers' campsite, then head inland up a creek valley, cross an open buttongrass plain and climb the ridge to the summit. The described route returns the same way. Published distance estimates differ, so plan around a full-day walk rather than one mileage figure; the campsite gives an overnight option. No facilities are reported at the summit.

Look north over Wineglass Bay toward the Hazards, then turn south along the peninsula toward Schouten Island; Maria Island sits farther out when visibility is good. The summit itself is rocky, with low scrub around the outcrops. For a photo, keep a few summit rocks along the bottom of the frame so the white curve of the beach has some scale and foreground.

The approach moves from the coast into a creek valley and an open plain of buttongrass. That landscape is more typical of central and southwestern Tasmania than the warmer, drier east coast. Freycinet's rocky heights are part of a much larger granite mass that continues across Bass Strait toward Wilsons Promontory.

On the Wineglass Bay beach approach, shell middens record Aboriginal life along this coast over tens of thousands of years before European arrival. They are part of the beach section of the walk, not features at the summit.
