Bowman Lake is a remote, forest-framed lake in Glacier’s North Fork, about eight miles long and a mile across. The shore is an easy place to stop once you get there: picnic, walk to the water, or launch a small boat, with mountain ridges drawing the view down the lake. Keep it on your list if you want a lake day away from the park’s busiest roads; the drive is a big part of the commitment.

The campground at the lake is about 32.5 miles from Glacier’s West Entrance. North Fork roads are slow, dusty and bumpy. The National Park Service recommends four-wheel or all-wheel drive because flats are common, and recommends being able to change a tire. Vehicles longer than 21 feet and trailers are not allowed on North Fork roads, so check the limits before setting out.

There’s no cell service, and no food service at the lake. Polebridge, outside the park, is the only place in the North Fork with services, so bring lunch and supplies. If you want to visit Kintla Lake as well, the park recommends allowing a full day for the two-lake drive. Bowman Lake Campground has 48 sites, with seasonal vault toilets and potable water; those facilities belong to the campground. Day-use parking capacity isn’t published, and visitors report both quiet visits and busy parking.
