Before you go

Parking

Start at Bowman Lake Picnic Area in Glacier’s North Fork, reached on unpaved roads through Polebridge. The road is dusty, bumpy and slow; AWD or 4WD and tire-change readiness are recommended. North Fork roads prohibit vehicles over 21 feet and trailers. There is no cell service, and Polebridge is the only nearby community with services. Check current road access before driving in.

Safety

Expect a steep climb and descent, then retrace them on the way out; the published route profile gives about 1,200 feet up and 1,000 feet down on the outbound leg. This is a remote hike with no cell signal in the North Fork. Pets are prohibited on park trails and in the backcountry.

Hiking Lower Quartz Lake Trail

The lake takes a full dayLower Quartz Lake is a 7.

Lower Quartz Lake is a 7.5-mile out-and-back from Bowman Lake Picnic Area to the backcountry campground at the lake's southern end. The route follows the West Lakes approach, crosses Bowman Creek on a footbridge, then climbs through forest before dropping toward the water. Allow about six hours and save energy for the return climb. Treat 7.5 miles as the planning distance: the mapped path to the campground is about 3.75 miles each way. Published figures range from 3 to about 3.5 miles one way; the mapped path to the campground is about 3.75, so plan for 7.5 miles round trip. The longer Quartz Lake Loop continues to other lakes; this route turns around at Lower Quartz.

The climb and returnThis is a steep, rolling hike rather than an easy lakeshore stroll.

This is a steep, rolling hike rather than an easy lakeshore stroll. The published profile describes about 1,200 feet of climbing followed by a 1,000-foot descent on the way in. You retrace the same trail, so the descent becomes a climb on the way back. Forest covers much of the route; the main payoff is reaching the lake, not a series of overlooks.

At Lower QuartzThe route ends at the backcountry campground beside Lower Quartz Lake.

The route ends at the backcountry campground beside Lower Quartz Lake. Overnight camping requires a wilderness permit; the campground is not a frontcountry service stop. At the shore, look back across the rocky shallows and driftwood toward the forested hills. The trail does not make a loop here, and it does not continue to the other Quartz lakes on this itinerary.

Start at Bowman Lake Picnic Area in the North Fork, reached on unpaved roads through Polebridge. The roads are dusty, bumpy and slow; the park recommends AWD or 4WD and being prepared to change a tire. North Fork roads have no cell coverage and exclude vehicles over 21 feet and trailers. Polebridge is the area's only community with services, so plan food and supplies before driving in. Check current road and trail status because seasonal access and closures can change. Pets are not allowed on the trail or in the backcountry.
