Before you go

Parking

Goat Haunt is not road-accessible; visitors arrive by boat or hike in. From the dock, follow the paved path to Goat Haunt Ranger Station and start on Waterton Lake Trail. There is no road-accessible trailhead parking.

Best time to go

The Waterton River suspension bridge is part of the route. Seasonal suspension and plank bridges start going in late May, and most are removed by late September, so verify this crossing and the boat schedule before a late-season hike. Status postings can lag behind changing trail conditions.

Safety

This is a remote backcountry route. At Goat Haunt, a ranger station and seasonal scenic cruises are the only services. The Waterton River suspension bridge may be removed seasonally; verify the crossing and boat access before setting out, especially after late September. Hikers going beyond Goat Haunt Ranger Station must follow current U.S. Customs reporting rules and carry approved travel documents.

Follow Waterton Lake Trail past the Rainbow Falls junction and cross the Waterton River on a suspension bridge. Keep right at the campground junction, then turn onto Boulder Pass Trail. The climb is steep at first and eases before the first mile. As the trees open, Mount Cleveland appears to the southeast and Citadel Peaks to the south.

The route follows Lake Janet's north shore, where dense vegetation leaves little easy beach access. Porcupine Ridge rises across the water and can reflect on calm mornings. Look for that view from the lakeside tread; the route continues toward Lake Francis, but turn around at Janet for this day hike.
