Parking

No road access or parking at the Waterton Lake Trail junction. Reach it on foot from Goat Haunt Ranger Station; Goat Haunt is accessible by trails or by boat from Waterton Townsite when service runs. The approach distance is separate from the mapped North Boundary route.

Safety

This is a remote route with seasonal creek crossings; bridges may be absent and smaller streams can require wading. Check current trail status. If entering the U.S. at Goat Haunt from Waterton, hikers going beyond the ranger station must report through CBP ROAM and receive clearance; arrange customs requirements before crossing into Canada.

Hiking North Boundary Trail

A remote walk to the borderNorth Boundary Trail is a 5.

North Boundary Trail is a 5.3-mile point-to-point segment, one way, from the Waterton Lake Trail junction west to a clearing near the U.S.–Canada boundary. It follows Boundary Creek through forest and canyon rather than climbing to a summit. A published description gives 5.8 miles, so use the longer number for planning until that gap is resolved. If you turn around at the boundary, the North Boundary segment alone is about 10.6 miles out and back, plus the separate approach to its junction. Allow around four hours for the outbound walk; returning makes it a full day before access miles.

The route starts in lodgepole pine and moves into denser canyon forest beside Boundary Creek, where the walk passes cascades and pools. It climbs and rolls before leveling toward the border; tree cover keeps long views limited for much of the way. Near the end, the trees open onto a broad cleared strip. Leave some of the conifers at the edges of a photo so the opening reads as a break in the forest. The mapped trail ends just short of the international line; treat the clearing as the end of this route.

Reaching the junctionThere is no road access or parking at the North Boundary junction.

There is no road access or parking at the North Boundary junction. Reach it on foot from Goat Haunt Ranger Station by the separate Waterton Lake Trail; Goat Haunt itself is reached by trails or by boat from Waterton Townsite when that service is running. That approach adds distance beyond the 5.3 miles above. Goat Haunt has restrooms and drinking water, but no food or services were found along North Boundary itself.

Seasonal bridges may be installed at Boundary Creek, while smaller streams can still require wading. Bridge work starts in late May, is generally finished by mid-July, and most bridges are removed by late September, so check the current status before setting out. Pets are not allowed on park trails. If you arrive from Waterton and hike past Goat Haunt Ranger Station, report your U.S. entry through CBP ROAM and wait for clearance; the short ferry-visit exception does not cover this hike. Arrange the required customs steps before crossing into Canada.
