Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for sitting around camp and exploring nearby walks. Early arrival is the best strategy on busy weekends, while a weekday gives the campground a noticeably quieter feel. Morning light through the pines is gentle for photographs; late afternoon brings longer shadows and warmer colour across the clearings. Bring your own drinking water, firewood and camp lighting, and check fire restrictions before relying on a campfire.

Campsites and access

There are about 30 unpowered sites for tents, camper trailers, caravans and campervans. The camping areas are divided into broad zones with a fair amount of choice, but privacy varies and larger clearings can gain neighbours as the day goes on. Space is first come, first served, so arrive early on weekends and holiday periods if you want a particular kind of site.

The campground is roughly 9 to 10 kilometres north of Halls Gap on Mt Zero Road. The approach changes from sealed road to unsealed gravel and can be corrugated, but ordinary 2WD vehicles can reach it in reasonable conditions if driven slowly. The campground sits just outside the national park in the Mount Difficult State Forest. Dogs are allowed here on a lead; that does not extend to the national park, where dogs are generally prohibited except in vehicles on sealed roads and in sealed parking areas.

Plantation is a roomy bush campground set in an old Radiata pine plantation on the eastern side of the Mount Difficult Range. The tall trees give it a distinctive, shaded feel, while the grassy clearings make it a practical base for exploring the northern Grampians rather than a scenic attraction in its own right.

What is providedExpect useful but basic bush facilities: fire pits with barbecue plates, picnic tables,…

Expect useful but basic bush facilities: fire pits with barbecue plates, picnic tables, non-flush toilets and bucket-style bush showers. The campground's seasonal water tank is not potable, so bring enough drinking water for your stay. There is no rubbish collection, so pack out everything you bring. When fires are permitted, use only the designated fireplaces and bring suitable firewood.

The grassy edges and pine canopy are good places to slow down at dusk. Kangaroos and wallabies are regularly reported around the open areas, and native birds use the trees. Keep food secured and watch wildlife from a distance rather than feeding it. Avoid setting up beneath dead or unstable limbs, especially in windy weather.
