Overview

About Clematis Falls

Why stop

  • Mossy rock, ferns, and close-up waterfall views
  • Easy to add to a Halls Gap day

Heads up

  • Can be a trickle or dry between rains
  • Rocky final section is awkward for prams and wheelchairs
Clematis Falls is a seasonal waterfall tucked into bushland above Halls Gap. When it is running, water fans down a broad, dark layered rock face into a shallow rocky pool, with moss, ferns and eucalyptus framing the view. It is a close-up, sheltered experience rather than one of the Grampians' big open lookouts.

Best time to visit

Go after recent rain, with late autumn through spring generally offering better odds of flow than the drier part of the year. Spring adds wildflowers along the walk, and Kangaroos and emus may appear along the walk. Move quietly through the trees and scan the track edges, but treat sightings as a bonus.

Soft morning or overcast light works well here: it keeps detail in the bright water and dark rock, while wet surfaces add texture. Allow extra daylight for the return if rain has made the trail slick.

More about Clematis Falls

Walk and directionsStart at Halls Gap Recreation Reserve and use the signed path at the rear of the reserve.

Start at Halls Gap Recreation Reserve and use the signed path at the rear of the reserve. The return walk is about 2.4 kilometres and usually takes around an hour. It is generally easy, with a modest uphill feel through tall open forest, but the final approach becomes rocky and uneven. Wear shoes with a firm grip, especially when the rocks are wet.

This is not a drive-up waterfall. Do not blindly follow the Clematis Falls map pin as a driving destination, since navigation can send visitors toward private property. Park at the recreation reserve and begin from the signed path beside the oval.

Practical notesThere is parking at the recreation reserve, but the falls themselves are an unserviced nature…

There is parking at the recreation reserve, but the falls themselves are an unserviced nature stop. Use toilets and fill water bottles in Halls Gap before setting out, and bring drinking water, a light rain layer and food if you plan to linger. The rocky final section is a poor fit for prams and wheelchairs, even though the walk is short.

Stay on the signed route, keep clear of unstable or slippery rock, and do not treat the shallow pool as a swimming area. Clematis Falls is worth adding to a Halls Gap day when the forecast has delivered rain; in dry weather, choose it for the bush walk and wildlife rather than the waterfall alone.

Why stopThe catch is the water.

The catch is the water. In a dry spell the cascade can shrink to a trickle or disappear completely, so this is a stop to time after recent rain rather than a guaranteed waterfall spectacle. Even when the falls are quiet, the short bush walk is pleasant and wildlife is part of the appeal.
