Hopi House is a multi-story sandstone landmark on the South Rim in Grand Canyon Village, beside El Tovar and the Rim Trail. Mary Colter designed it for Fred Harvey's Indian Arts sales rooms, and it opened in 1905. Today the visit combines a historic building, displays of Native American art and artifacts, and a working shop. Step inside if you like architecture or Native art; if you expect a full museum experience, know that the retail side is a big part of the stop and some visitors wish for more interpretation.

The building's stepped rooflines, reddish stone walls, tiny windows and projecting ladders give it a layered pueblo-inspired shape. Colter based the design on Hopi dwellings at Old Oraibi, using local stone and adobe. The terraces work like roof porches, while the front entrance adapts the building for visitors. For an exterior photo, step back on the paved approach and keep the ladder and stepped roofline together; that outline is what makes the house recognizable.

Inside, the small windows let in little light. Low ceilings, peeled-log beams and ceilings made from saplings and grasses coated with mud make the rooms feel close and dark, with wall niches and corner fireplaces adding detail. The second-floor gallery displays historic Native American objects. Watch your head at low doorways.

Hopi House was built largely by Hopi workers and was designed to put Native American arts in front of Grand Canyon visitors. It was modeled on Hopi homes, but adapted for tourism: roof terraces became porches and a front door replaced the traditional roof entrance and ladder. The building became a National Historic Landmark in 1987, and Hopi consultants took part in a 1995 renovation to preserve its original design.

Art, sales and the people behind themThe building's history is also a commercial one.

The building's history is also a commercial one. Hopi people lived and worked here, demonstrating crafts for visitors, while Fred Harvey controlled the retail operation; the residents did not own the building and had limited control over sales. Porter Timeche moved from blanket demonstration into buying for the company, and Hopi artist Fred Kabotie managed the shop in the 1930s. An early upstairs display included Navajo blankets that won the grand prize at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair; the collection later grew to nearly 5,000 Native American art objects. The tourist dances once staged here ended in the early 1970s amid objections to commercializing cultural and religious traditions.

The shop has featured katsina dolls, Native American jewelry, Navajo rugs and pottery, though the selection changes. There is no food service listed inside Hopi House, so plan food separately. It's an easy on-foot addition to a Rim Trail walk through the village, rather than a separate drive just to shop.
