Moran Point

Moran Point is a roadside viewpoint on Grand Canyon’s South Rim, reached from Desert View Drive. From the rim you can see the Colorado River far below and a rare cross-section of tilted rock layers. Keep it if you like understanding the canyon’s geology as well as looking across it. Parking and interpretive information are available at the pullout, and the main view is a short walk from the car.

The light and shadows shift across the walls through the day; visitors often time a stop for sunrise or sunset. For a photo that shows the depth, keep a sliver of river and some of the angled strata in the same frame. The river gives the layers scale.

Look north for the Grand Canyon Supergroup, tilted layers exposed below the flatter Paleozoic rocks. Toward the west, the dark and pink Vishnu basement rocks sit beneath them. The contrast is easy to spot: long, angular bands against the canyon’s more horizontal shelves.

A short stretch of the Colorado River is visible below the point, cutting through orange Hakatai Shale beneath tall brown cliffs of Shinumo Sandstone. Across the canyon, the layers include black Cardenas Basalt, purple Bass Formation, orange Hakatai Shale and brown Shinumo Sandstone. Moran Point also looks into Red Canyon, where John Hance built a mining operation and several trails.

The lower Unkar Group, part of the Supergroup visible here, formed between 1.255 and 1.1 billion years ago from sand and mud carried north by rivers draining mountains in what is now West Texas. The upper Chuar Group formed later, between 780 and 729 million years ago, in a shallow sea while Earth’s continents were joined as Rodinia; that upper group is not visible from this point. Fossils and stromatolites in these ancient layers preserve traces of early microbial life.

The point is commonly credited to painter Thomas Moran, but it may honor his brother Peter. Peter visited the South Rim with John Bourke in 1881; Thomas did not see this rim until 1892, although he joined Powell’s Grand Canyon and Colorado Plateau expedition in 1873. Congress bought Thomas Moran’s painting The Chasm of the Colorado in 1874. The timeline makes Peter a credible possibility, so the exact namesake remains unsettled.

This is a viewpoint where a few extra minutes can change what stands out. Shadows pick out the tilted bands, and the canyon shifts from broad, even color to stronger contrasts as the light changes. Sunrise and sunset are popular times, but the visible layers and river make the stop worthwhile in other light too.
