The Teton fault is still active. A major earthquake moves the blocks about 10 feet in all: roughly two or three feet up on the mountain side and four to six feet down in the valley. Since movement began about 10 million years ago, the total offset is probably more than 25,000 feet. The steep break in front of you is the landscape-scale result.
