String Lake Loop

String Lake Loop is a 3.7-mile circuit around the lake, through shaded shoreline forest and over a low ridge on the west side. Allow 2–3 hours. It is rated easy, with 540 feet of listed elevation gain, but roots and rocks interrupt the tread and the west-side climb is steeper than the east shore. Start by heading south along the east shore for the more gradual approach. Dogs are not allowed; the park entrance fee applies, but there is no separate activity fee or reservation.

The east-shore path is mostly level, with exposed roots and rocks underfoot. At the southern end, the loop shares a short stretch with the Jenny Lake route; follow the String Lake branch at the junction to keep circling the lake. The west side climbs toward the Paintbrush Canyon junction and a ridge above the water, then eases through more open slopes and aspens. Stay on the String Lake circuit at the canyon junction. The loop reaches a footbridge near the Leigh Lake portage and outlet before returning toward the shared trail access.

The changing shoreline is the draw: forest closes in on the flatter east side, then the western ridge opens views across the lake toward Mount St. John, Rockchuck Peak and the Jackson Hole Valley. Near the north end, the footbridge frames the water with the peaks behind it. The west side also passes through the open burn area left by the 1999 Alder Fire, a clear contrast with the tree-covered sections. Aspens along the route add another change in color in fall.
