Moose Ponds is a group of shallow, plant-filled ponds reached from the Jenny Lake Loop at South Jenny Lake. The National Park Service lists an easy 2-mile out-and-back, or a 3.4-mile lollipop loop if you want a longer walk. It is a good detour for moose habitat and a small pond-side viewpoint.

Moose use the shallow, vegetated water as feeding habitat and are often seen wading or bathing here. Wildlife is most active early and late in the day, but a sighting is never assured. Keep at least 25 yards from any moose; give it room to move without changing its behavior.

The dirt trail has exposed roots and rocks, and a short, steep hill leads to the upper viewpoint across the ponds. From there, keep the water along the bottom of your frame with the forested slope and Teton peaks behind it; that shows how the ponds sit in the mountain landscape. The longer route loops back toward the Jenny Lake trail.

Flowers in spring, aspens in fallThe walk passes through forest and meadows.

The walk passes through forest and meadows. Wildflowers line the trail in spring and early summer, while the aspens add yellow in fall. In winter, snow covers the route; snowshoes or cross-country skis are needed.

Drive Teton Park Road and turn at South Jenny Lake; the branch to Moose Ponds starts just beyond the shuttle-boat dock. The lot fills during mid-summer, so an early start helps. Pets are not allowed. There is no separate activity fee or reservation, but the park entrance fee applies.
