Hidden Falls Trail

Hidden Falls Trail is a one-mile out-and-back from West Shore Boat Dock on Jenny Lake, with about 300 feet of total gain. It is an easy, short route to a snowmelt-fed cascade on Cascade Creek, and a good fit if you want a real climb without giving up half a day. Plan for one to three hours for the full outing; the hike is short, but the falls and boat access can slow the visit.

The path climbs the west-shore hillside. Expect dirt broken by rock steps and exposed roots and rocks. The trail rises about 200 feet toward the falls; the grade is steady but manageable, and the uneven footing takes more attention than the mileage. Views open across Jenny Lake toward Jackson Hole. Snow can linger into spring and turn slick.

The route ends by the waterfall viewing area. Snowmelt feeds the cascade, and you may feel spray near the rocks. This is the hike’s payoff, but it is a popular stop; expect other visitors around the viewing area, and peak-season return boat lines can add time. The trail continues about half a mile beyond Hidden Falls to Inspiration Point. Stop at the falls for this route; the viewpoint extension is a separate, longer outing.

Use the South Jenny Lake parking area, then ride the privately operated shuttle to West Shore Boat Dock. Tickets are sold at the dock, so check the operator’s schedule before setting out. The lot fills in mid-summer; arrive before 9 a.m. if you can. Walking from South Jenny Lake instead is a different 4.9-mile round trip, with about 620 feet of gain. The West Shore route’s one-mile distance does not include the shuttle ride.

Jenny Lake lies in a basin excavated by Ice Age glaciers. They left rocky ridges called moraines around the lake’s edge. Look back over the water from the west shore; the view helps explain why the lake sits at the foot of the Teton Range and why the valley opens toward Jackson Hole.
