Port Campbell Beach

Port Campbell Beach is a small, roughly 150-metre sandy beach at the inner end of Port Campbell Bay, right beside town. This sheltered pocket is a useful stop for a short swim, paddle or picnic between the Great Ocean Road’s cliff lookouts. It’s a town beach with a jetty, grassy foreshore and cafés nearby, rather than a long open-coast strand.

The beach sits beside a grassy picnic area and playground, with toilets, picnic tables and nearby parking. Cafés and shops are within walking distance in town. Two beach wheelchairs are available; confirm local booking and beach-access arrangements before relying on one. Check current beach-safety advice and patrol status before swimming. A sheltered bay is not a guarantee of safe conditions.

A 50-metre jetty projects into the water for boating and fishing. From the shore or jetty, frame the curve of sand with the headland and pine-lined foreshore behind it. The beach lies at the inner end of a partly infilled coastal valley about 200 metres wide; its narrow opening shields it from much of the open Southern Ocean swell. Storms can strip sand and expose rock, so the shorebreak can change.

The town was named for Captain Alexander Campbell, a trader between Victoria and Tasmania who took shelter in the bay while pursuing a whale. A beacon was placed on the headland in 1874, the town was surveyed in 1875, and a pier stood near the present jetty by 1878. Port Campbell’s history is tied to shipwreck response along this exposed coast: local records count more than 80 wrecks along the 130-kilometre stretch between Moonlight Heads and Port Fairy.
