The Grotto

The Grotto is a coastal limestone sinkhole and arch in Port Campbell National Park, near Peterborough. Erosion has opened a hollow in the cliff so the Southern Ocean appears through a rounded rock window, with a tidal pool below. Keep it on your Shipwreck Coast drive if you want a close look at the coast’s limestone formations.

From the car park on The Grotto Track, the walk is about 700 metres return, roughly 20 minutes. It reaches an upper platform with a broad coast view, then descends stairs to the lower viewing platform. The upper platform is described as wheelchair- and pram-accessible; the lower view requires stairs. The narrow shared approach can bunch up at busy times, though visitors also report no wait.

From the lower platform, frame the rounded arch with the pool in front and open water beyond it. The upper platform gives you more of the coastline at once. Rocks can be slippery, cliffs are unstable, and the Southern Ocean can have strong currents and rough surf, so stay on the formed access and platforms. Dogs aren’t allowed.

Coastal erosion opened the sinkhole-like hollow in the limestone shore. It reads as a mix of sea cave and arch, with the water visible through the gap. The shape is the story here: pale rock, the sheltered pool and the open ocean meet in one compact view.
