Trail guide
Bert Alsop Walk follows North Lorne’s foreshore from the Lorne Visitor Centre to the beach below the Allen Street car park. The connected mapped path is about 1 mile (1.6 km) one way and takes about an hour; published walk descriptions list 2 km. Walk through Top Bank Caravan Park to Swing Bridge, cross it, then turn right along the foreshore. You pass memorial graves and a Melaleuca grove before reaching the sand. The route is marked easy and stroller-friendly, with concrete footway, boardwalk and gravel path along the way.
This works best with a pickup at the Great Ocean Road car park below Allen Street. Otherwise, retrace the same route; that makes the walk about 2 miles (3.2 km) return. A beach return to the river mouth is possible only when the tide allows, and its distance isn’t specified, so don’t rely on it without checking conditions.
The white Swing Bridge over the river is the clearest landmark and photo stop; look back from the foreshore for the bridge reflected in the water. The walk honors Bert Alsop, a local butcher and carpenter. It opened on 14 April 1985, when his wife Beryl unveiled a plaque. Dogs are allowed on lead.
