Trail guide
Elliot River Loop Walk is a moderate 4.5 km circuit from Shelly Beach Picnic Area, down the Elliot River Track to the river mouth, over Elliot Ridge and back on a management vehicle track. It moves through blue gums and tall eucalypts, a rocky river crossing, fern gullies and varied forest. Allow about two hours, and longer if you want time at the river and viewing platform. The climb is short but steeper than the distance suggests. Dogs are not allowed in the park.
If you want a shorter outing without the ridge climb, the Shelly Beach Walk is 1.8 km return on the same path to the beach and back.
The route crosses on stepping stones among large rocks. It’s the walk’s defining moment, but it’s a real crossing rather than a bridge: water can cover the stones after heavy rain. The nearby platform gives a partly screened look toward Elliot Falls. From the crossing, keep the stone steps in frame to show how the track climbs away from the river.
After the river, steep stone steps climb out of the valley toward Elliot Ridge. That’s the hardest part of the circuit, and the steps can be slippery. Take your time here; the moderate rating can make the climb sound easier than it feels.
Beyond the ridge, the route winds back through tall eucalypt forest and ferny gullies before following the management track to the picnic area. The changing forest is a good reason to do the loop instead of turning around at the river, even if the return track is less dramatic than the crossing.
