Seals and water access

The larger island is a haul-out for Australian fur seals and is closed to landing. The inner reef can be reached by boat, swimming or small watercraft, or on foot from Hayley Point only at very low tide. Strong currents, undertows, sudden weather changes and large waves make this a separate coastal outing to plan carefully, not a casual walk from your campsite.

Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary protects 12.5 hectares around Little Henty Reef, less than 50 metres offshore. Sandstone shelves form pools, gutters and ledges with sea snails, tubeworms, barnacles and bryozoans; bull kelp, red algae and green algae fringe the islands. Waves have worn the Henty islands down over thousands of years until they barely rise above the water.
