Princetown to the Twelve Apostles

Princetown to the Twelve Apostles is a 7.6 km one-way section of the Great Ocean Walk, from Princetown Wetlands Boardwalk to the Twelve Apostles Visitor Centre. It trades a quick car-park visit for a coastal approach on foot, ending at the famous limestone stacks. Allow about two to three hours and 179 m of climbing; 1.5 to two hours is a brisk estimate before long photo stops. It suits walkers who want the coast to be part of the experience. If you only want the lookout, driving straight there is the much shorter choice. Arrange your ride from the finish first: this is not a loop.

Start by the Gellibrand River estuary and cross the wetland boardwalk to join the Great Ocean Walk. It is a gentler opening than the cliff country ahead, with a short bridge and views across the wetlands. The estuary supports varied birdlife, though sightings change from day to day. Once you join the coastal track, keep following its marked line west; the mapped route includes the final underpass connection to the visitor centre.

The walk rises and falls as it tracks the open coast toward Gibson Steps and the Apostles. Expect a mix of boardwalk at the start and natural track, including sandy stretches, rather than a paved promenade. The route is graded easy to moderate, but 7.6 km and repeated coastal climbs make it a real half-day outing. There is little shelter from wind or rain along the exposed sections, so conditions can make the same distance feel tougher.

Near the end, the track passes Gibson Steps and goes beneath the Great Ocean Road before the last several hundred metres to the Twelve Apostles Visitor Centre. The viewing platform is the payoff: limestone stacks rise from the Southern Ocean, and their colour changes with the light. Take time to look from more than one spot instead of photographing the first stack and turning back. Toilets and a cafe are at the visitor centre, after the walk; there is no food stop along the trail.

A shuttle or a car shuffle is essential. The Princetown Recreation Reserve may offer parking for Great Ocean Walk hikers, but parking permission is not confirmed; check before leaving a vehicle there. An older Parks Victoria booklet quotes 5 km from the reserve, a different Princetown access point from this 7.6 km boardwalk start, so use the distance for the route you are actually walking. Dogs are not permitted on the national-park trail. Coastal edges are exposed: keep back from cliff edges and check current track and tide advice, since beach and river sections of the western Great Ocean Walk can become unsafe in high surf or at high tide.
