Spruce-Fir Nature Trail

Spruce-Fir Nature Trail is a 0.38-mile round trip from the Kuwohi Road pullout: a short shared approach leads to the roughly 0.27-mile loop, then you retrace that approach. Allow about 20 to 30 minutes. The route stays in the woods rather than climbing to a summit or viewpoint, so choose it for a close look at the high-elevation spruce-fir forest. The grade is gentle; the narrow plank sections need more attention than the mileage suggests.

The path alternates native tread with narrow wooden planks over muddy ground. They are not a wide, even boardwalk, so take your time where the boards cross soft patches. Moss, ferns, fallen trunks and young firs keep the forest floor interesting as you circle back to the access path.

Red spruce grows near the southern edge of its range in the Southern Appalachians, and Fraser fir is another signature tree of these high ridges. The introduced balsam woolly adelgid has caused widespread Fraser fir die-offs in the high Smokies. Standing and fallen firs sit among younger trees in the understory, a close-up look at a forest still changing.

Use the small pullout on the south side of Kuwohi Road. A Smokies parking tag is required when your vehicle stays longer than 15 minutes. Pets are not allowed on this trail; the park's leashed-dog exceptions apply only to the Gatlinburg and Oconaluftee River trails.
