Guide
Tejas Wilderness Campground is a five-site, tent-only backcountry camp in the wooded high country of Guadalupe Mountains. If you’re planning an overnight hike and want shade and some shelter from the wind, it’s a good pick. It isn’t a roadside stop: walk 5.5 miles from Pine Springs Trailhead or 6.2 miles from Dog Canyon.
There’s no potable water or toilet, and the campground is accessible only on foot. Carry all your water and gear, and pack out waste with at least one landfill-safe toilet bag per person per night. A Wilderness Use Permit is required; advance reservations are available through Recreation.gov. Campfires are prohibited throughout the park, so use a backpacking stove.
Tall trees give the sites deep shade in the morning and late afternoon and shelter from high winds aloft. An old metal ranch-era water tank sits near the campsites. It’s a trace of the area’s ranching past, not a water source.
