“You're coming up on the access road to Hosmer Grove, a good stop for native birds and a short forest walk. The roughly half-mile loop takes about thirty minutes, longer if you linger at the birdwatching station.”

Stop 4 on the Hosmer Grove Nature Trail is a dedicated birdwatching station in the forest, with a bench, fixed binoculars and an interpretive wayside. I'd pause here if native birds interest you; a sighting isn't guaranteed. Start by listening to the calls, then use the binoculars and panel to identify birds in the trees.

The interpretive panel names ʻamakihi, ʻapapane, ʻiʻiwi and ʻalauahio among Maui's common remaining native forest birds. Watch the ʻōhiʻa beside the lookout, too. If a bird settles among the pale blossoms, leave some leaves in frame to show its forest setting. Sightings are a bonus, not a promise.

The wayside traces Hawaiian honeycreepers to a finch-like ancestor that reached the islands millions of years ago. That single lineage gave rise to as many as 54 forest-bird species. It also explains how habitat loss, climate change and mosquitoes carrying avian malaria have pushed native forest birds toward higher elevations. It adds a bigger story to a quiet look into the trees.

Hosmer's planted forestRalph S.

Ralph S. Hosmer, Hawaiʻi Territory's first superintendent of forestry, planted experimental plots here in 1909, testing introduced conifers and eucalyptus at high elevation. His work gave Hosmer Grove its name. The trail leads through those planted trees near the native forest the bird station is meant to help you observe.
