Trail guide
Hosmer Grove Nature Trail is an easy 0.54-mile loop at about 6,800 feet, with roughly 50 feet of elevation change. Plan around 30 minutes for the walk; two gulch lookouts and time watching birds can make it closer to an hour. The route shifts from trees planted for an early forestry experiment into open native shrubland. It’s a lovely short stop for birders and anyone curious about the park’s planting history; come here for a nature walk, not crater views.
Start at the signed trailhead beside the campground. The first stretch passes beneath introduced conifers and eucalyptus; farther along, the canopy gives way to native shrubland. Two lookouts face a gulch, but the better chance for close bird views is among the shrubs. Pause quietly near flowering ʻōhiʻa or māmane and watch for ʻapapane, ʻiʻiwi and Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi. They’re a highlight, never a guarantee.
In 1909, Ralph S. Hosmer, Hawaiʻi’s first territorial forestry superintendent, planted conifers and eucalyptus here as an experimental forestry plot. He wanted to test whether useful timber could grow at high elevations. The path now puts those introduced trees beside native shrubland, a compact lesson in an early plan whose priorities later shifted toward protecting water and forests.
Park at the signed Hosmer Grove Trailhead at the end of Hosmer Grove Access Road; the small parking area is shared with the campground. A pit toilet and picnic shelter are nearby, but there’s no food or supplies for sale in the park. Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile ecosystem; pets aren’t allowed on park trails. At this elevation, take it slowly if you’re not used to altitude. Entry to the Summit District between 3 and 7 a.m. requires a sunrise reservation, and the regular park fee applies.
