Trail guide
Wabasso Lake Trail is the short version of Trail 9: a moderate out-and-back from P16 on the Icefields Parkway, across low forested ridges to a beaver-made lake. Parks Canada lists 3.4 km each way (6.8 km / 4.2 mi round trip) and 2–3 hours, with about 107 m of climbing and 74 m of descent. The route continues around the shore and north toward the Valley of the Five Lakes; for the lake walk, turn around at Wabasso Lake and retrace the same path. Published distances vary a little with the lake-side endpoint and whether shoreline connectors are included.
The trail rolls over several low ridges through forest rather than following a level lakeshore path all the way. The last ridge opens across the Athabasca Valley toward Mount Edith Cavell and the reddish quartzite peaks beyond. A continuous dirt path crosses the ridges; this is a moderate walk rather than a flat lakeshore stroll. Low marshy ground near the lake can be soft or wet underfoot.
Wabasso Lake was created by beavers. Look to its northeast corner for the long, high dam that holds the water back. The lake and its wooded shore are the main stop; the best broad mountain view comes earlier, from the final ridge. For a photo, frame Mount Edith Cavell across the valley from that ridge, then look along the lake's northeast shore for the dam.
Start at P16, 14.6 km south of Jasper townsite on the Icefields Parkway. Dogs are allowed on this route but must stay on leash. No food, potable water, or toilet facility was verified at the trailhead or along the walk, so plan those separately. Conditions change; check Parks Canada trail conditions before setting out.
