Minong Ridge Overlook

Minong Ridge Overlook is a rocky viewpoint at the island’s western end, reached on the Minong Ridge Trail from Windigo. The first rocky ridge on the western approach marks the overlook, with Lake Superior and the Canadian shoreline to the north and the island’s west end in the broader view. It takes about three trail miles each way: choose it for a real ridge walk, not an easy pullout.

Allow 2–6 hours for the six-mile round trip. The route passes through maple forest and across creeks before climbing to the ridge. Minong Ridge is the park’s most challenging trail; expect a narrow, unpaved path about 18 inches wide, with roots and rocks. Bring a map and compass and be comfortable navigating a backcountry route.

Isle Royale has no road access; visitors arrive by boat or seaplane. The Windigo approach is listed for spring through fall, and another approach reaches the trail from Rock Harbor via the Greenstone Ridge Trail. Pets are not allowed on this hike. Carry the water and food you need for the outing.

At the rocky ridge, look across Lake Superior toward the Canadian shoreline, with the western end of Isle Royale in the wider frame. In autumn, foliage adds color below the horizon; clear visibility matters for making out the far shore.
