Rock Harbor Campground

Rock Harbor Campground is a backcountry campground on Isle Royale’s northeast end, with eleven individual tent sites, nine shelters and three group sites among spruce and fir near Lake Superior’s rugged shore. It’s the park’s busiest campground, close to the ferry and seaplane hub and within easy reach of the visitor center, comfort station and lodge. I’d stay here for a convenient camp-to-hike base; if you want a more outlying feel, expect this hub to be busier.

Individual tent sites and shelters are first come, first served. The three group sites are for parties of seven to ten and need an advance reservation. From June 1 through September 21, individual stays are limited to one night. If the shelters are occupied, check the tent sites too; they’re a separate first-come option.

This isn’t a drive-up campground. NPS lists access by trail, canoe, kayak or private boat; ferry and seaplane passengers arrive at the nearby Rock Harbor hub. There are no access roads or RV sites. The ground is rough and uneven, and the campground itself has no wheelchair access, though paths around the marina and lodge are accessible.

The campground has seasonal toilets and potable water. Showers and laundry are at Rock Harbor’s comfort station, while the trading post and two restaurants are in the wider harbor area, separate from the campsites. These services are seasonal, so treat them as useful conveniences rather than year-round guarantees; no specific restaurant menu was verified.

The surrounding boreal forest is mostly spruce and fir, with Old Man’s Beard lichen hanging from branches. Lake Superior shapes the rocky shoreline, and loons are part of the sounds NPS highlights for the area. Several short and longer hikes start from Rock Harbor, so you can camp near the hub and head out on foot without moving your base.
