Rock Harbor Visitor Center

Rock Harbor Visitor Center is the National Park Service’s small information center at the northeast end of Isle Royale, right at the end of Rock Harbor Dock. Make it your first stop ashore if you need permits, entrance-fee information, trip planning or a ranger’s answer before you set off. The center has displays and park publications, but its real value is getting you oriented for the island.

Follow Rock Harbor Dock to its end and look beneath the breezeway on the right. The building is small, with limited room inside, so expect a compact orientation stop rather than a full museum visit. If you’re unsure about a hike or boat route, ask before heading out; visitors often find the ranger guidance useful.

The Isle Royale & Keweenaw Parks Association runs a store at the center. Across the breezeway, the separate Rock Harbor Trading Post sells basic food and camping supplies, a handy option if you need something before continuing into the park.

Rock Harbor sits on the island’s northeast end, with no road access to the center. Reach it by ferry, seaplane or private boat, then walk down the dock. Visitor-center services are seasonal, so check current NPS hours and transportation schedules before planning around a stop.

The visitor center is also a place to get the Rock Harbor NPS passport stamp, a small keepsake from your arrival on Isle Royale.
