HI Athabasca Falls

If you want Athabasca Falls practically to yourself, this wilderness hostel is the move. It’s a short walk from the viewpoints, so you can slip over at sunrise or after dinner when the tour buses are long gone. The vibe is friendly and communal—more mountain cabin than hotel.

This is genuinely off‑the‑grid: solar power for lights, mountain well water, outhouses, and no showers. There’s no WiFi or cell service, which is half the point. You get a well‑equipped communal kitchen (guests note plenty of dishes and even condiments), a big, cozy common room, a deck with a BBQ, and a fire pit. Linens are provided. Dorms sleep 12–16, and there are a couple of private family rooms. There’s also secure bike storage, board games and a small library.

Athabasca Falls isn’t tall, it’s powerful—glacial water gets squeezed through a narrow canyon, throwing mist and thunder you can feel in your chest. Short paths and bridges loop multiple viewpoints over potholes and the little gorge. It’s photogenic year‑round and shifts character with the seasons.

Expect savvy ravens around the parking areas, and occasional elk or bighorn sheep roaming the grounds. Driving the quieter 93A spur to or from the hostel ups your odds of spotting wildlife. Keep distance and give animals the right of way.

The rocks around the falls get slick with mist. Stay behind railings, watch your footing, and keep kids close—this river is all force, no forgiveness.
