Horseshoe Lake Circuit

Horseshoe Lake Circuit is a short, scenic loop that skirts a cliff‑rimmed, crystal-clear lake—a quick win right off the Icefields Parkway. The total loop is roughly 1.5–1.6 km (about 1 mile) with minimal elevation change, typically taking 20–30 minutes. Most people linger to swim, sun on the rocks, or watch (and sometimes join) the cliff jumpers.

Expect a forest approach that quickly opens to rocky shoreline and multiple viewpoints. The trail is easy overall, but there are cliff edges, exposed rock slabs, and a few small bridges and stairs. Near the water, the path sometimes weaves over bedrock and can feel less obvious—keep an eye on your footing and the route. There’s no gradual beach here; access is from rocks and ledges, and the water is deep and very cold, even in summer.

This is a choose-your-own-adventure stop: bring a picnic and sprawl on warm rock, cool off with a brisk swim, or simply stroll the loop and take photos of the impossibly clear water and surrounding forested bluffs. Kayaking and fishing are possible, though you’ll need to carry your gear from the parking area to the lakeshore. Some visitors even scuba dive thanks to the lake’s clarity.

Practicalities: the pullout is unmarked and easy to miss; the former sign has been removed. There are no notable facilities—plan to be self‑sufficient and expect limited cell signal. Dogs are allowed on leash. Because of cliff exposure and slippery rock, close supervision is essential with kids (and distracted adults). Cliff jumping is popular but risky; injuries do happen.

Best time to hike: May through September offers the most reliable conditions, and summer is your season if you want to swim or lounge by the water. Even then, the lake is cold. Outside of summer, the loop still works for a short scenic walk, but lingering to swim loses its appeal. This stop is often quieter than the marquee sights along the Parkway, but warm weekends can draw a crowd. Check current conditions—this trail has been listed as closed at times.
