Whirlpool River Trail

Start at the Athabasca Pass Trailhead at the end of the unpaved Moab Lake Road. The route follows an old fire road through the Whirlpool River valley to a scenic backcountry campground above a side channel of the river. The broad corridor is straightforward to follow, but it is a remote backcountry access route rather than a surfaced park path.

This is an out-and-back day hike to Whirlpool Campground. The physical corridor is stored once from the trailhead to the campground; the 8.3-mile distance is the visitor's total return distance. The campground is a natural stopping point and a good introduction to the historic Athabasca Pass route.

The trailhead is reached from Wabasso Road (Highway 93A) via the 6.8-km unpaved Moab Lake Road. Beyond Whirlpool Campground, the Athabasca Pass route continues for a remote 48.5 km one way toward Tie Camp, Middle Forks, Scott, Kane Meadows, and Athabasca Pass. That continuation is a multi-day backcountry trip, not part of this day-hike route.

Expect forest, river-valley views, and uneven or wet sections. Carry bear spray and use standard wildlife precautions. Beyond Whirlpool Camp, many creeks and rivers are unbridged and fords can be dangerous or impassable at high water. Overnight travel requires a backcountry camping permit.
