HI Maligne Canyon

Location is the headline. From your door, you can wander to a sequence of bridges that peer into a gorge up to ~50 m deep and, at points, only a couple meters wide. Interpretive signs explain the canyon’s karst story—springs bubbling in from underground and a river that may have once run through caves before glaciers peeled the roof away.

It’s deliberately rustic. There’s no running water and no showers; toilets are outdoor, non‑flush. Expect a basic shared kitchen and a low‑frills, communal vibe. Multiple reports note limited electricity in rooms (think lighting and a sparse outlet or two), but don’t count on modern hotel conveniences. Free parking is available on site.

The canyon trail is a choose‑your‑own‑length kind of outing. Short loops near the upper bridges deliver fast, dramatic views of waterfalls, rapids, and sheer limestone walls. Continue down‑canyon to the 5th and 6th bridges for a longer walk and a different feel. Springs visibly feed the river along the way—don’t skip them.

Birdlife is part of the charm here—ravens are common, and rare black swifts have been noted in the canyon. Larger wildlife does roam the corridor; follow current advisories and standard safety practices.

• Facilities: Outdoor toilets; no showers. Simple, heated common areas and an equipped but basic kitchen.
• Popularity: The upper canyon area is one of Jasper’s busiest. Parking and viewpoints can be crowded in peak hours.

As of recent updates, the hostel is temporarily closed and was reported destroyed in the 2024 wildfires. Check HI’s official page and Parks Canada advisories for the latest on rebuilding and area access.
