Tekarra Lookout via Signal

Point-to-point Skyline Trail finish from the Signal trailhead (north) to Tekarra Campground, following the Signal Mountain Fire Road into the alpine and then the Skyline Trail south to Tekarra. This route is about 8.9 miles (14.2 km) one way and typically takes around 6 hours of hiking, with roughly 1,100 m of descent and about 200 m of climbing. The reverse direction is steeper and gains more elevation. Arrange a shuttle or vehicle plan before starting.

From the Signal trailhead, the route follows the fire road to Signal Camp and joins the Skyline. Beyond the junction, the trail crosses open, exposed subalpine and alpine terrain before reaching Tekarra Campground. The high ridges provide views toward Mount Tekarra, Signal Mountain, Grisette, The Watchtower, and the Athabasca valley; the long fire-road section can feel monotonous.

Above treeline, weather changes quickly and the trail can be snow-covered outside the usual July–September season. This is bear country: carry bear spray and know how to use it. Dogs are not permitted between Maligne Lake and the Signal trailhead because of critical woodland caribou habitat. Backcountry camping at Tekarra or Signal requires a reservation and permit. Navigation is generally straightforward in clear weather, but fog, wind, and fresh snow can obscure the route; carry a map or GPS.

The Signal trailhead has a small dedicated parking area and information kiosk; overflow parking is available at Maligne Overlook about 500 m beyond. Check Parks Canada trail, weather, and road information before travel.
