Overview
Wall Street Mill is the park’s best‑preserved historic gold‑ore mill, tucked among Joshua trees and boulder piles. It’s not a mine but the place where ore from nearby claims—like the Desert Queen—was crushed and processed. The walk is short, the setting is classic high desert, and the history hits you right away.
What You’ll See
- The mill site itself, with preserved machinery behind protective fencing.
- Abandoned, rusted cars and scattered mining relics—prime photo fodder along the route and near the mill.
- Waypoints tied to the area’s human story, including the Desert Queen Well and the Worth Bagley stone marker connected to a 1943 shooting.
The Hike
Plan on roughly 2 miles round trip on mostly flat terrain. Expect stretches of loose sand that feel slower on the return. You can start from the busy Barker Dam lot or take a short dirt road to a smaller, closer parking area to shave off some walking.
History Snapshot
Assembled by Bill Keys in the 1930s, the mill processed ore from small operations around Queen Valley. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the last, best examples of its kind in the park. The nearby stone marker recalls Keys’ 1943 altercation with Worth Bagley—one of the desert’s more infamous tales.
Wildlife
This is classic Mojave habitat—think lizards and desert birds on most days. Visitors occasionally report bighorn sheep in the broader area, but consider that a bonus rather than a guarantee.
Best Time to Visit
Aim for early morning or late afternoon for cooler temps, softer light on the rusted metal and monzogranite boulders, and an easier time with parking. Weekends and holidays see steady traffic thanks to the nearby Barker Dam loop.

- Detour to the Wonderland Ranch ruins and scan for the Desert Queen Well on the way.
