Ryan Mountain Stargazing Area is the paved parking lot at Ryan Mountain Trailhead, one of Joshua Tree's four NPS-designated stargazing areas. It's a convenient place to watch the sky without climbing the mountain. For darker skies, head farther south to Pinto Basin, which NPS identifies as the park's darkest area.

A clear night around the new moon gives you the best chance at a sky full of stars. May and June are a strong window for the Milky Way, which can arc over the eastern horizon soon after dark. Let your eyes adjust for 20–30 minutes and use a red light. Stay awake and within 20 feet of your vehicle; this is a stargazing stop, not an overnight camping spot. NPS lists it as a year-round activity with no activity fee or reservation; park entrance fees may apply.

The same lot starts the Ryan Mountain Trail, a strenuous 3-mile round trip with 1,050 feet of elevation gain. The panoramic summit views aren't from the stargazing lot. Ryan Mountain's exposed rock includes Pinto Gneiss, estimated at 1.8 billion years old, the oldest rock type in the park.
