Cap Rock

Cap Rock is a large granite outcrop and picnic stop in central Joshua Tree, near the north end of Keys View Road at Park Boulevard. Its broad, flat-topped boulder gives the formation its name, and the signed nature loop winds among nearby rocks and Joshua trees. The loop is 0.4 mile with only 20 feet of gain. The formation is visible from the parking area, so you can make this a quick look or walk the loop for a closer desert wander.

The route is hard-packed sand, about 36 inches wide on average. It is not paved; sand can get loose or deeper depending on weather, and boulder overhangs pinch the path in spots. The small climb is easy for many walkers, but the surface and overhangs mean it may work for some, not most, motorized wheelchair users.

These formations are monzogranite, rock that cooled from molten material underground more than 100 million years ago. Cracks divided it into blocks, groundwater weathered their corners, and later flash floods stripped away the protective surface. Those rounded boulders were shaped before the dry desert you see now exposed them.

This is set up for a bring-your-own picnic, with tables and grills beside the formation. There are 27 parking spaces, including two standard accessible spaces, and a nearby vault toilet with grab bars but no running water. Its concrete pad sits two inches above the surrounding ground.

You can photograph the formation without walking the loop, but the path gives you Joshua trees and changing foregrounds. Frame the flat cap with one of the trees for scale. Visitors sometimes report a pink cast at sunset, though the light has to cooperate.

The area has a Gram Parsons story, too: after the musician died in 1973, friends brought his body to Joshua Tree for a private cremation. Accounts disagree about the exact spot, so it is not a confirmed event at this boulder.
